Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 with SP1
VNUNet.com – May 16, 2008
Now Microsoft have gone one stage further and have launched theirlatest version Virtual PC 2007 as another free download. Virtual technology enables you to run other operating systems on yourcomputer. For instance instead of trying and testing software on your computerwhy not install a virtual PC for this purpose? This means that you can freelyinstall as much software as you wish without the installation affecting youreveryday computer – you can decide what software you like to use before youinstall on your computer for real. Virtual technology has other benefits such as enabling a software developerto test their software on different operating systems before release. Forinstance there’s no reason why you can’t host a copy of Windows Me Windows2000 and another copy of Windows XP for testing purposes. With virtual technology you can simply switch back to a previous state. Youcan install your virtual operating system and save the current state (ie thecurrent installation) and then switch back to that at a later date if yourvirtual operating system becomes unstable.

Microsoft?s message board was within hours of the firm pumping the operating system?s final service pack out to the masses inundated with complaints about machines being crippled by the endless reboot cock-up. n Wednesday HP which is the world?s biggest computer vendor posted advice on its website about its Pavilion and Compaq Presario desktop PCs:?After installing the initial release of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP an error condition can occur. The Service Pack 3 update copies an Intel power management driver to the computer that was not on the computer before the update. ?During Windows startup computers with AMD processors may experience a blue screen error? it said. That acknowledgement which somewhat swerves any admission of guilt follows Microsoft?s statement earlier this week in which it blamed EMs for ?improperly placing a Windows XP image created for an Intel-based computer onto machines with non-Intel chipsets?. Notably Microsoft avoided specifics on which computer manufacturers had been guilty of mistakenly loading the wrong Sysprep image on their machines. Microsoft also confirmed ? much to the chagrin of XP customers who have patiently awaited SP3 after its release was spurned by a Vista-centric Redmond several times ? that the endless reboot problem first surfaced way back in 2004 when service pack two landed.

value; window. That way they’ll run faster and be more secure and so will your PC. Unfortunately visiting the Web site of every one of your applications can be so time-consuming that you’ll never get around to doing it. So instead get this freebie. It scans your system lists all of your applications and then regularly checks if any don’t have security patches.

But the days of big-bang launches from the likes of Sony andMicrosoft may be numbered as console makers devise new ways to spinout the lifespan of their hardware. As things stand now gaming consoles are often morepowerful than the average household computer and in the caseof Sony’s PS3 have even been used in lieu of super computers forcomplex research by enterprising scientists. But the trend towards more and more power is reversing to thepoint where experts have begun to speculate about a future “virtualconsole” model reminiscent of the “thin client computer” championedby racle last decade. In the virtual console universe the hardware would fade intothe background to become little more than a hub while new releasesof games accessories upgrades and other home entertainment andinternet applications would be delivered via software and firmwareupdates. As compelling as this may sound for those who balk at forkingout between $400 and $1000 for a new console the concept of theentertainment hub is sharply at odds with the current reality. IBM a co-developer of the Cell chip used in Sony’sPlayStation3 says consumers currently have more computing powerplugged into their televisions via their gaming consoles than theyhave in the PCs sitting on their desks. “Game processor power exceeded that of PC processors around theyear 2000. What’s more game processing power is increasing fourtimes every three years compared to two times every three years inPCs” says John Cohn a scientist at IBM. Until now the average life of a console has been about sixyears which is about the time it takes the developers who ofteninitially sell their hardware at a loss to realise a return on thetheir investment via an exclusive ecosystem of games accessoriesand upgrades. Jeff Brand an associate professor in communication and media atBond University says the concept of a virtual console to replacethe current generation of hardware is not beyond the realms ofpossibility. “Already PlayStation 3 has gone from an expensive console to amore cut down machine to compete in the market.
