Mac or PC: Making the Big Switch
PC Magazine
In those days you got text with a text graphics card and bare-bones color graphics with a CGA adapter and I thought it was the height of cool that I could play Microsoft Flight Simulator during downtime. I was so smitten with the new tech that when the ill-fated PCjr came out I almost convinced my parents to get us one. Soon after that my buddy John showed me an article in Creative Computing magazine about an upcoming computer called Macintosh from the company that produced our “ancient” Apple II computers. I didn’t think much about it since Apple was obviously yesterday’s news and the future of the PC was all in IBM’s hands. Apple II was a dying closed-off system while the IBM PC was the system that both businesses and consumers thought of when they thought of computers. Then I got a summer job at a local Computer Depot and consequently got some hands-on time with the Macintosh. The first-generation 128K Mac was underpowered to be sure but the new graphics interface sure beat having to type DS commands just to get to the word processor and modem terminal program.
Nvidia hires Stanford’s computer science department head as chief …
VentureBeat CA
The move is consistent with Nvidia’s decision to invest heavily in research and development even in the steep downturn. Jen-Hsun Huang chief executive of Nvidia said at a press dinner on Monday that the company has several major expansions of its research efforts under way. Nvidia will continue to invest in PC graphics chips but it is also expanding its efforts in mobile computing and GPU computing or using the graphics processing unit to perform non-graphics computing tasks. The latter area — dubbed stream processors — is one of Dally’s specialties. Dally has been a professor of computer science at Stanford since 1997 and chairman of the department since 2005. He and his students developed many of the processing technologies that are in use in parallel supercomputers today. He co-founded the startups Velio Communications and Stream Processors.

Court foils Intel bid to delay case
European Voice Belgium
Intel had until 17 ctober 2008 to reply to a second set of formal charges sent by the European Commission on 17 July 2008. The Commission claims that Intel offered financial incentives to computer-makers to use Intel processors at the expense of AMD its principal rival. The European Commission has accused Intel of shutting AMD out of the market for central processing units (CPU) the main processors at the heart of computers and has charged Intel with offering substantial rebates to European personal-computer (PC) retailers to sell PCs with Intel processors. Intel is also accused of offering a PC-maker payments to delay the launch of a product line incorporating a CPU made by AMD. The third charge is that Intel offered rebates to a PC-maker to source all its processors for its laptop computer range from Intel. A spokesperson for Intel said the company was ?disappointed? and is ?considering its options?. He said that the company was ?very concerned about the lack of certain documents in the case file? which he said would help Intel conduct an ?effective defence?.
