They have been especially well received in several vertical markets including the medical field and many DCs are beginning to see how it can improve their practices’ efficiency. Specifically they are using a Tablet PC to access and record patient data as they move throughout their office. WHAT IS A TABLET PC? A Tablet PC is a portable hand-held computer that uses a special pen to interact with the system. The goal is to simulate a clipboard and pen to record information but the information goes directly into the computer. Tablet PCs run a version of Windows XP or Vista. This enables them to run any software that can be run on a regular Windows desktop or laptop computer. These operating systems also include special “inking” technology known as digital ink.

The only other major computer maker who has avoided the category is Apple whose Chief Executive Steve Jobs has declared that Apple doesn?t know how to build a sub-$500 computer that isn?t ?a piece of junk. ? For its part Sony said it intentionally waited until now as part of its product planning strategy. Earlier this year the company introduced the Vaio P-Series a more expensive notebook computer starting at $1000 for customers who wanted all the features of a regular PC in a smaller package. By contrast Sony said its new Vaio W-Series netbook is priced to appeal to a wider audience. However nearly every other major global PC maker has rolled out an ultra low-cost laptop for Web browsing and emails since the category was first created in 2007. Research firm Gartner estimates that the ?mini-notebook? category will reach 21 million units in 2009 and 30 million units next year. The company said the W-Series netbook will sell for around 60000 yen or about $630 when it goes on sale in Japan in August.
