Sales of PC Microprocessors Jump 10 Percent Says IDC

The increase is unusually good for the second quarter of a year according to IDC. But at the same time IDC remains cautious saying the jump in sales does not signal the return of significant demand for new PCs. The traditional back-to-school PC buying season won’t save Intel AMD or computer makers according to IDC. The growth comes in part from netbook makers who held off buying processors in the first quarter but are now filling their stockpiles again. Also the numbers also look less rosy when compared to the second quarter of last year. Unit shipments declined by 7 percent and revenue shrank by about 15 percent. Intel was the big winner.

net a website research project to track and predict changes to the Earth’s climate; Rosetta@home dedicated to finding medical cures for cancer and other diseases; and Africa@home which is focused on developing strategies to combat malaria in Africa. "In the same spirit as Intel’s Small Things Challenge Progress Thru Processors underscores our belief that small contributions made by individuals can collectively have a far-reaching impact on our world" Deborah Conrad Intel vice president and general manager of its Corporate Marketing Group said in a statement. "By simply running an application on your computer which uses very little incremental resources you can expand computing resources to researchers working to make the world a better place. "This type of distributed computing project focuses on using the computing power that otherwise would be wasted by computers left on at the office or home to help speed the process of performing complex calculations. Examples of other massive distributed computing projects include Folding@Home currently the world’s largest such project which simulates complex protein folding and molecular dynamics; and SETI@Home a project to help search vast quantities of space to search for extra-terrestrial intelligence. Intel’s Progress Thru Processors project runs in the background when a computer is not being fully utilized and the company designed the program to not affect performance or any other tasks. “NComputing builds software that takes advantage of the fact that chips in computers are far more powerful than most users need. V Space software divides processing power in computers into arrays of “virtual” machines each linked to separate monitors and keyboards. A typical personal computer (PC) user routinely calls on about 10 percent of a machine’s computing power according to NComputing. “We put in software that allows multiple separate desktops to live inside a PC; the computer is shared” Dukker said. “If a person is not a rocket scientist simulating the creation of the universe or someone else who needs all those millions of instructions per second most of a computer’s capability is wasted. “The latest computing technology can be put into work stations for as little as 70 dollars (US) per virtual machine according to NComputing. “The NComputing model disrupts the normal value chain of the one-to-one PC business system” said Brooke Partridge chief executive of Vital Wave Consulting firm that specializes in technology growth in emerging markets.
